Cameo 6 – Letting Him Take Charge of Minutiae
January 15, 2021
When I read this cameo essay, I see that Jesus has some specific teaching for Helen that could definitely help us on our own journey. It is too bad she felt so confronted by it that she did not share it with Bill and therefore it did not make it into the Course proper.
There is a neat sequence of guidance that Helen experienced in this scenario that we can use for ourselves.
1. Jesus can and will guide all aspects of our lives in a way that will meet our needs, save time, and free us to give miracles. He specifically wants to guide the more trivial aspects of our lives. We may disagree with his idea of trivial!
2. Jesus will guide these trivial aspects of our lives more efficiently than we can.
3. Jesus will follow our criteria for what he manages. By this I mean that if we are specific in what we need he will follow our specific criteria. We need to understand however, he will know better than ourselves when there is an openness in our minds to a different way of thinking. “You thought of Klein’s yourself…Then you remembered a coat Grace once got there that was much cheaper…and asked yourself if it was really right to be sold on a particular trade name through advertising. That opened your mind.” Jesus is going to be aware of our readiness for change before we are.
4. With the above in mind then, the more open we are to this process the more efficient and beneficial it becomes.
5. If we become overly resistant to this process, we will develop roadblocks by falling back on old learning patterns. When this happens, we need to seek help from others to keep us from getting bogged down.
6. One way not to get bogged down is to “leave everything to [Jesus]. Because of her disturbing dreams Helen even decided to ask Jesus to stay with her unconscious while she slept.
Questions for Reflection:
1. How do you think you would react if Jesus suddenly asked you to let him take care of the trivia of your life and it ended up being something you regarded as deeply personal and not at all trivial?
2. How can you use this experience of Helen’s to become more accepting to Jesus as your teacher and guide?
3. How do Helen’s difficulty with dictation and upsetting dreams demonstrate her unwillingness to not get bogged down?
4. How is this idea a way of freeing our will?
An Exercise:
Tonight and every night practice Helen’s idea. Say “Jesus stay with my unconscious while I sleep.” Then let your worries go and leave everything to him.
Practice Suggestion:
I will not waste my energy today, but leave everything to Jesus.
